Empire/Victorian transitional, scroll arm, sofa, circa 1840-1855. The serpentine-arched top rail, the seat rail and arm facings rail are heavily carved with a reticulated leaf scroll. The top rail is flanked by further scroll shaped carvings at each end of the sofa. Further carved decoration can be found on the deeply shaped skirt carved with a repeat of the foliated scrollwork. The frame boasts attractive up-swept scroll end arms decorated with foliated carvings that continue through to decorate the curved splay sofa legs. The end of the sofa legs is a carved scroll that serves as the foot for the sofa. The sofa has been upholstered in a top quality silk fabric, handspun in South Korea, decorated with a foliate pattern, in shades of red The sofa measures 4 inches high x 7 inches wide x 2 1/4 inches deep and is available in a walnut finish.
