The game of chess can be traced way back to the 7th century but didn’t become popular in England until the late 17th century. Chess boards and game tables started appearing in well to do society around about this time. This specialist chess table is a reproduction from George 1st era and is oval in shape with a chess board in the center and room on either side of the board to place the fallen chess pieces in play. A brass gallery around each end of the table prevents the chess pieces from falling off the table. A drawer at the front and back of the table was used to store the chess pieces. The drawer fronts are decorated with a rectangular raised cock bead around the 2 brass drawer knobs. A raised carving around the ends of the table under the gallery is also decorated with a raised cock bead matching the drawer fronts. There are 4 turned fluted legs whic are fitted with casters. A set of black and white hand made chess pieces are included with the table. The table is finished in walnut.
